Malin Gabriella Nordin
Solace
22.08—20.09.25
It is with great pleasure that Gallery Steinsland Berliner presents Solace, the latest exhibition by Swedish artist Malin Gabriella Nordin. This occasion marks the artist’s fifth solo show at the gallery and follows several notable recent projects in Stockholm.
In Solace, a new suite of paintings by Malin Gabriella Nordin is unveiled. Nordin’s easily recognisable expression is infused with a sense of wonder at both the natural and the transcendental. Her intuitively guided practice moves with curiosity between media and approaches, resulting in a dynamic and captivating body of work where painting, drawing, and sculpture coexist.
This exhibition sees Nordin refocus attention on her painting practice after a period of diversifying her focus by exploring materiality and scale through sculptural work. The title Solace refers to a feeling or experience of being comforted or otherwise relieved from troubles, perhaps indicating a period of harmony for the artist found in this return to her foundations.
In Solace, Malin Gabriella Nordin delves deeper into her inner imagery, those dreams and perceptions, that constitute the core of her artistry. An increasingly complex pictorial language emerges, appearing as dreamscapes with a veiled connection to lived experience. Ever-present is the artist’s unmistakable feel for colour. The paintings’ motifs shift from pared down, graphic compositions to intricacy reminiscent of her previous experimentation with stained-glass windows or the layered paper collages that have long been part of her practice. Depicted are nature scenes in varying degrees of abstraction. Like windows into a mystical world, or like pages from a sketchbook, the works align in a repeating format, offering a personal glimpse into an ever more embodied point of view.
Malin Gabriella Nordin (b. 1988, SE) lives and works in Stockholm. She holds a BFA from Bergen Academy of Art. Her work was most recently seen in solo exhibition Begynnelser at The Carl Eldh Studio Museum (2024) and in an extensive mural at Sergels Torg, commissioned by the City of Stockholm and completed this year. Additionally, Nordin recently returned from a residency at Villa San Michele (Capri) granted by its governing foundation.
